Community Development

Each of our operations has a community social and economic development plan which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

By aligning our community initiatives with every one of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we put our CSR strategy at the forefront of best practice in private sector social investment locally and globally.

We seek to ensure that our employees, their families and their immediate communities realize the positive economic impacts of mining and to assist in improving the quality of life for those people and communities impacted by our activities. Plans are developed according to a combination of location, legal requirements, community needs and business risk. We are continually refining our social investment strategies and through partnerships with government and civil society, we seek to ensure that benefits of mining extend beyond the life of our mines.

Local Communities

Earning and maintaining community support for mining is fundamental to our success.

Globally, there is public concern about the perceived effect of mining on the environment and local communities. This why we have a comprehensive corporate social responsibility program that balances best practice with site-specific needs.

Our initiatives and activities are consistent with international best practice and are carried out in a systematic manner across all operations. Our commitment to local stakeholder engagement is laid out in our Community Engagement Policy.

Each of our projects and operating mines has a comprehensive community relations program. We have staff dedicated to engaging with communities affected or perceived to be affected by our activities, or that have a genuine interest in the performance of our business.

In addition to ongoing engagement, each of our operations and projects has a grievance mechanism for receiving complaints and concerns from communities, and ensuring they are effectively responded to.

Resettlement

We have an established resettlement processes that adheres to international standards of fairness and transparency. These processes guide our actions when activities involve land access and displacement.

As part of our process, in-depth consultations and negotiations are conducted with project affected people, under the leadership of experienced specialists in resettlement. In addition, each of our operating mines and projects has a comprehensive community relations program. We have staff dedicated to engaging with communities affected or perceived to be affected by our activities or that have a genuine interest in the performance of our business. In addition to ongoing dialogue, each of our operations and projects has a grievance mechanism for receiving complaints and concerns from communities, and ensuring they are effectively responded to.
