Zambia’s next generation
of geoscientists

The future of the mining industry will be shaped not only by what we can find in the ground, but also by the people who will find it. Ensuring that the future of mining remains bright requires attracting the best talent from the higher education system and helping them to make the link between academic theory and the rigors of the field.

First Quantum Minerals’ Applied Field Course
This is the aim of our Applied Field Course, a flagship partnership between First Quantum Minerals (FQM), the University of Zambia and The Copperbelt University. This course helps students by giving them a foundation in practical application to build on the academic theory that they have already learnt.
The curriculum mirrors the full exploration cycle. In an intimate, immersive setting in the bush, students engage with the realities of modern mineral exploration:

  • Early-stage activities: Mastering the precision of mapping and soil sampling
  • Geophysical surveys: Moving from manual labour to high-tech data collection
  • Data integration: Introducing students to the wide variety of datasets that we use, and teaching them to integrate different layers so they
can see what lies beneath the surface

Inspiring future leaders
For FQM to continue to fulfil its commitment to the countries in which it operates, it needs to help build a steady stream of top-tier talent – individuals who are ready, willing and able to step into critical roles. This initiative goes beyond basic training, helping to ignite a passion for the opportunities offered by a a career in mining.

This is why one strength of the Applied Field Course lies in its social element. At the end of the day, students sit down with FQM professionals who have built diverse, international careers, and hear about how these careers have positively enhanced their lives.

As the video illustrates, this environment helps the students to visualise their own lives within the industry. By seeing the work in action and speaking to those who do it every day, the path from student to exploration specialist becomes clear.

Strengthening the link between industry and academia ensures that the next generation of geoscientists is equipped to lead. By providing the tools, practical know-how, and mentorship that is required for success, the Applied Field Course is securing a vibrant future for the Zambian mining sector.
