Statement from First Quantum Minerals

First Quantum categorically rejects any allegation that it has ever engaged in the illicit funding of political parties. For clarity, First Quantum has neither funded the UPND in the past, nor promised to fund the UPND’s current 2026 election campaign.

First Quantum also categorically rejects the central premise underpinning the Global Witness report, namely that it has engaged in any covert or improper campaign to influence Zambia’s democratic processes, improperly influenced government decision-making, or obtained preferential treatment from public authorities.

Global Witness’ report is entirely based on the unsubstantiated allegations of a small number of anonymous individuals, and one named individual aligned with the political opposition. Despite our repeated requests, no corroborating evidence has ever been provided.

It is clear to us, if not to Global Witness, that the purpose of these allegations, made on the eve of national elections, is to undermine trust in the democratic process, as well as to damage the reputation of First Quantum. Ironically, by lending its considerable weight to this narrative, Global Witness is assisting those seeking to unduly influence the outcome of Zambia’s election.

For a mining country like Zambia, there should be a healthy political debate around mining policy and regulation. However, it is vital that the debate be underpinned by facts, not salacious fiction. By promoting unverified rumour, Global Witness has done Zambia a double disservice; it has interfered in national politics, and undermined the debate on Zambia’s future economic direction.
