More to mining:
the diverse roles of First Quantum
There’s a lot more to mining than excavation. Globally, we employ people in a wide variety of roles as we seek to provide the societies of today and tomorrow with the materials to thrive. We need expertise in areas from geology to law, and from biology to healthcare… Below, hear from our colleagues about the important and interesting roles they play in the wider First Quantum ecosystem, and what it means to be part of our journey.
Guillermo
Environment
I work as a Technical Specialist in Hydrobiology and Biodiversity, which means I support the monitoring programs and contribute technical and scientific trends to our biodiversity group. We monitor and analyze how fish behave in different environments to ensure that our operations are not having a negative impact on the fish in the water neighboring our sites.

Legal
My role as Superintendent of Permits and Lands is versatile and interesting. I obtain and conduct research on permits, renewals and compliance and participate in government audits as well as interacting with the authorities on our operations and purposes. I love that I get to work both in the office environment and in the field, delving into the jungle to visit our local communities. At First Quantum I have been trained, my talent recognized and developed. Most importantly, I’ve had a voice that is heard in the decision-making process.
Leonie
Health and Safety
I oversee the specialty teams that provide onsite health services including occupational health, first aid, fitness and wellness. It is a diverse role with a lot of opportunities for problem solving, helping people not only with their physical health, but their mental health too. I find working with my passionate colleagues to keep all our colleagues healthy incredibly rewarding.
Alejandro
Environment
As part of the water monitoring efforts, we’ve partnered with the University of Barcelona and the Instituto de Diagnóstico Ambiental y Estudios del Agua (“IDAE-CSIC”) on a pioneering program. We use behavioral analysis with AI to determine the biological effects on local aquatic fauna and our findings are validated by our scientific partners in Spain to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and reliability.
Steve
Exploration
I serve as the Exploration Manager for Latin America, leading an outstanding team responsible for exploration efforts in the region, aiming to find new mineral resources necessary for the energy transition. First Quantum is an excellent place to work for various reasons; there truly is a flat structure meaning it is very easy to share your ideas regardless of hierarchy, and you always feel listened to without fear of criticism.

Business Improvements
As an Optimization Manager at Sentinel Mine, I oversee a team of more than 100 people. We work to improve all areas of the operation, including data analysis, equipment improvements and maintenance. My role is a mix of technical and strategic responsibilities, working with other teams to locate, and deliver on, opportunities for improvement. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is witnessing the impact of our optimization efforts on the business. By leveraging data-driven insights and collaborative approaches, we’ve achieved significant improvements in efficiency, productivity, and cost reduction.
Kelvin
Planning and Reliability
I oversee Trident’s energy management program, leading on all energy efficiency projects to optimize energy consumption. Zambia is going through one of its worst energy crises ever, so this energy-saving program is important. Furthermore, I am expanding my network by engaging additional stakeholders from both inside and outside the Company, and the leadership team fully supports my plan for the implementation of an energy management system.
James
Exploration
I am the District Geologist for First Quantum’’s Exploration team in Kazakhstan. My current role is to establish our exploration efforts in a new jurisdiction, building geological teams that search for copper and nickel deposits, whilst overcoming the challenges of entering a whole new country. I have spent 10 years at First Quantum working in Zambia, Latin America, and now Central Asia – motivated by piecing together the exploration puzzle, which has provided so many excellent opportunities to live and work in other countries whilst developing my career.
Mariely
Human Resources
I lead initiatives to help find future leaders and help them grow. I focus on pairing individual aspirations with the evolving needs of the business, helping employees find the tools they need to succeed. I am passionate about advocating for women in the mining industry. Historically, mining has been a male-dominated sector, but we are working to change that by ensuring women have access to the same opportunities for growth and leadership. As part of this advocacy, I serve on the Board of Women in Mining Central America, where we focus on driving initiatives that promote gender diversity and support the advancement of women in the mining sector.
