Copper where you don’t expect it
We all use copper every day. There are some places where it is immediately obvious that copper is involved, like the copper pipes in your house, or fancy copper pans in some kitchens, but there’s others that you never even think of.
It’s the widespread use of copper (which is only growing ever wider), that drives the global need to expand copper production year-on-year, not only for the green energy transition, but also because we all use it every single day, often without realizing it.
Here are five ways that you probably use copper every day.
Water purification
Copper is used in water purification because it is an effective antimicrobial agent. When it is introduced to water, copper ions disrupt the cell walls of microorganisms which stops them from growing or spreading. It’s why copper is ideal in water pipes and tanks, filters and even swimming pools. In each of these situations it purifies the water, preventing waterborne diseases and helping to control the build-up of algae.
Medical devices
These antimicrobial properties make it perfect for use in medical devices. It is also a great conductor and corrosion and thermal resistant, this means that it helps the functioning of the devices while preventing them from breaking down over time or overheating.
Food industry
In addition to the food industry’s use of water purification, copper is found in other areas of the food industry as well – in processing equipment and also in food storage containers. Copper-based coatings are applied to storage containers to help prevent bacterial growth and ensure that your food remains fresh in transport.
Antimicrobial coatings
And it’s not only on food that copper is applied as a coating to prevent the spread of bacteria, germs and disease. It is also applied to doorknobs, handrails and countertops for the same purpose – especially important in hospital settings.
Haircare and skincare products
Copper peptides have fantastic antioxidant properties and an ability to stimulate collagen production. This can help improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles and promote hair growth – hence, the presence of copper in your skincare and haircare products. It can improve skin tone, texture and health as well as strengthening hair follicles, reducing hair breakage and enhancing shine.
