Infrastructure that unlocks
long-term growth
The Western Corridor Project is a major infrastructure initiative intended to strengthen regional connectivity, unlock economic potential, and improve access to services across Zambia’s North-Western and Western Provinces.
Key statistics
The project proposes the upgrade of the 371km Mutanda-Kaoma Road to international bituminous road standards, transforming a critical transport route into a modern trade corridor.
Delivered under a 25-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concession, the project reflects a long-term, sustainable approach to infrastructure development. We are proud to be involved in a project that supports economic growth and creates value for many communities in Zambia. By improving transport links between Zambia’s interior and the West Coast of Africa, the Western Corridor Project will play a central role in supporting trade, regional integration and inclusive development.
“This is a great day because infrastructure, roads in particular, open up investment.”
President Hakainde Hichilema
What will the project deliver?
The scope of the project extends beyond road rehabilitation, including
- Construction of three toll plazas and two weighbridges, creating a sustainable funding model for long-term maintenance
- Upgraded and reinforced bridges to improve safety and resilience
- Development of urban roads, improving access within towns and communities along the route.
Once completed, the corridor will significantly reduce travel times and transport costs and improve road safety and reliability. It will also facilitate trade with neighbouring countries like Angola, Botswana, and Namibia, strengthening Zambia’s position as a regional logistics and trade hub.

First Quantum Minerals’ role
First Quantum Minerals is supporting the project as an anchor investor an infrastructure partner, building on its long-standing relationship with Zambia and its experience delivering large-scale infrastructure through a PPP.
It has committed USD$30m in equity towards the project development and early construction works. This investment reflects our belief that well-designed infrastructure is fundamental to long-term economic growth, not only for industry but also for communities, business, and public services that depend on reliable transport networks.
As a major participant in Zambia’s economy, First Quantum Minerals understands the importance of infrastructure projects that serve multiple users and sectors. The project is designed as a national asset supporting agriculture, trade, small businesses, and cross-border commerce, alongside industrial activity.
Benefits for local communities and economies
For communities along the corridor, the project has the potential to deliver tangible, long-lasting benefits. During construction, the project is expected to support up to 1,000 jobs, with a further 250 long-term roles. Beyond direct employment, improved transport links make it easier for people to access markets and services and open up other economic opportunities.
The inclusion of tolling and weighbridge infrastructure is intended to ensure the corridor remains well maintained, creating a financially sustainable model that does not increase pressure on public finances.
Long-term commitment
The Western Corridor Project reflects our broader approach to operating in Zambia, working in partnership with government, investing for the long term, and supporting development that extends beyond individual operations.
As Zambia continues to pursue ambitious growth and regional integration goals, investments like this will be critical to turning potential into progress and ensuring that this growth is supported by the infrastructure that it needs to sustain it.
