THINK! Ambassadors
THINK! Health & Safety program.
Our Safety concept is ambitious. We find that overall Safety improves when we teach workers to assess their environment, identify hazards and take action using their own critical judgement rather than relying on blanket rules and indiscriminate procedures. Our challenge is to instill in all our employees and contractors an attitude of “Safety starts with you,” and to make it stick 100 per cent of the time. To this end, at our Zambian sites, we have introduced illustrated characters to be the ambassadors of our THINK! Safety Campaign.
Learning through sharing
Our characters are designed to grab attention and provide an appealing way to represent ideas. We know that storytelling and well-developed characters create memorable messages which are better retained by audiences.
We use the First Quantum Safety Ambassadors to show, not tell, how THINK! works to keep our workplaces safe. They live in the world of “What if?” and can show through storytelling how dangerous events may play out in a fictional world. Helping people to visualize consequences and scenarios also improves retention and helps to keep safety where we need it to be – in the front of everyone’s mind.
Kapala, a lovable scoundrel, blunders through important safety learnings. His teammate and good friend, Kalwisha, is always there to save him. And Kaimbi, the wise and experienced worker, offers guidance and makes sure that Kapala always walks away with a clear understanding of how to prevent an incident in the future. The three characters have featured in posters, comics and animated videos and add flair and memorability to all our THINK! related communications.
We want everyone who works at our sites to go home safely to their families at the end of every shift. We also want them to stay safe at home. The next step for THINK! Safety is to roll out the concept to the communities located near our operations to improve safety and reduce accidents in homes, farms, businesses and schools.
