Guelb Moghrein
Our copper-gold operation driving economic growth in Mauritania.
Key metrics
Operational
One of the largest external investments in Mauritania
Guelb Moghrein is 250km north-east of Nouakchott, near the town of Akjoujt in Mauritania. The site has developed two pits: the Occidental, nearing its end of life by 2025, and the Oriental, targeting high-grade sulphide ore, completed in 2021.
The site processes around 3.4 million tonnes of sulphide ore each year, producing a copper-gold concentrate. The plant converts flotation tails into 570,000 tonnes of low-cost, high-quality iron concentrate annually.
From late 2023, Guelb Moghrein began a carbon-in-leach process to recover gold, extending the mine’s economic life to at least 2027.
It employs more than 1,200 people, almost all Mauritanian nationals, and contributes significantly to the local economy.
First Quantum acquired an 80% interest in Guelb Moghrein in 2004, declared commercial production in 2006, invested in plant upgrades in 2008 and added a magnetite plant in 2013.
