Exploration

Vast undeveloped copper resource

La Granja is in the Querocoto district of the northern region of Cajamarca, Peru. It sits 90km north-east of Chiclayo – the capital of Lambayeque region – at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,800 metres.

La Granja is one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in the world. Discovered in the early 1980s, Rio Tinto operated the project from 2006 to 2023, carrying out extensive drilling to expand the resource and managing world-class community relations to ensure strong local support.

First Quantum acquired a 55% interest in La Granja from Rio Tinto in August 2023 and now operates the project, carrying out further resource drilling, expanding community support, and establishing options for project development to become a major copper producer.

Crucial to clean energy

Copper is vital to a number of industries. It is used to power homes, build electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure and a key resource in the transition to green energy.
