Exemplar of efficiency

4km south-east of the town of Pyhäjärvi, on Lake Pyhäjärvi in central Finland, you’ll find our copper, zinc and pyrite mine – Pyhäsalmi.
Acquired by First Quantum in 2013 through its acquisition of Inmet, but first developed in 1962, it is one of the most efficient non-caving underground mines in the world. Today, the 1,450-metre-deep underground mine is in closure phase and only pyrite concentrate is produced from tailings. Copper and zinc resources were depleted in 2022, though pyrite supply will last until 2025, after which the mine will be closed in accordance with best practice.

It will be repurposed by Callio, a project development environment operated by Pyhäjärvi town. Proposed new uses include physics labs, a secure data center, pumped hydroelectrical energy storage, gravity energy storage, and experimental production of insects and plants. Additonally, a 13 MWp solarpark constructed on the closed tailings pond will start operation in 2025.

Societal base materials

The copper extracted from Pyhäsalmi is vital to a number of industries. It is used to power homes, build electric vehicles and renewable energy infrastructure and is a key resource in the transition to green energy.
