Environment

We aim to reduce our environmental risk and take care of the places where we operate.

Effective environmental management

An effective environmental management system (“EMS”) is key to sound environmental practice, reducing environmental risk and achieving continual improvement.

We implement our EMS at each of our operations including:

  • Compliance with country laws and regulations
  • Our own environmental policy and international guidelines and standards
  • Sound baseline environmental and social risk assessments and mitigation strategies
  • Regular auditing of environmental management plans and systems
  • Efficient use of natural resources
  • Proper management of effluent, emissions, waste and biodiversity
  • Frequent stakeholder engagement
  • Emergency preparedness and response plans
  • Climate change management policies

Protecting local flora and fauna

We work with conservation organizations, local charities and national organizations to protect the rich biodiversity of the countries in which we work. Whether it’s elephants in Zambia or the harpy eagles, turtles, amphibians and forests of Panama, we’re committed to helping protect local wildlife.

Managing our climate impact

We are committed to extracting resources responsibly through our sustainability strategy, which is an intrinsic part of everything we do. As a responsible miner, we recognize our obligation to identify, assess and report on our actions to address climate change.

Conscientious water consumption

We have a commitment to minimise water withdrawal and discharge by adopting new technologies, continually improve efficiencies and re-using water on site wherever possible.

Safe waste management

We carefully manage the waste we generate as part of our operations in accordance with national waste regulations, site specific permits and relevant international protocols.

Nuanced approach to tailings design

We design and manage tailings storage facilities that are appropriate for local conditions and the materials that will be deposited. We ensure that our facilities are operating conservatively and well within the accepted guidelines of the world’s leading practitioners.
