Other metals

We realize significant value from a range of metals beyond copper and nickel.

Realizing the full value of what we find

Through our copper operations, we are also exposed to significant deposits of other metals.

We extract these metals in order to realize the full potential of our operations and to deliver wider value to society.

Cobalt

Cobalt is magnetic, has a high temperature resistance and can act as a catalyst. This makes it highly versatile and of great value to society. Smartphones, hard drives, wind turbines, medical equipment and electric vehicles are just some of its uses. It is produced by our copper operations as a by-product.

Gold

While its uses in jewelry and bullion are commonly known, gold has additional wide-reaching uses that have a meaningful impact on our lives. A ductile metal that conducts heat and electricity well, it can be found in medicines, lasers, genetic research, computers, telecommunication, and even space exploration. We produce gold at Kansanshi, Cayeli, Cobre Panama and Guelb Moghrein.

Zinc

Zinc’s myriad of uses spans batteries, medicines, paints, cosmetics and the creation of alloys such as brass and bronze. Most commonly, it is used to prevent galvanization of iron and steel, protecting these other metals from corrosion. Zinc is produced at Cayeli, and used to be produced at both Pyhäsalmi and Las Cruces before mining operations ceased.
